More Language Issues

Well, I speak French fluently....so I'm not talking about French issues and you might be surprised that I have issues in English sometimes because I forget English words even though I'm a native English speaker. This time, I'm talking about Spanish....one might say that I can speak Spanish and I can have conversations. This week, I have no choice but to speak Spanish. We are working with a church this week and there is a lady that has come to help us that is from Costa Rica and works in Spain and speaks a few words of English and knows some words in French. So, communication is hard. So, out of everyone, I speak the most Spanish and I have found myself translating (what???) either from English to Spanish or French to Spanish or Spanish to English and Spanish to French. Yeah, so I don't know how that is happening. Anyhow, I have made two errors that this lady found funny in the past few days and knowing the words, but just having the wrong word come out of my mouth. Example number one: We were eating lunch and she asked me what we were eating. The answer was duck. I learned the spanish word for duck from Elaine about 10 years ago or so when she told me that she wanted to have a child and have him say "El pato dice qua qua" meaning that the duck says quack quack. Anyhow, so she asks me what it is and I answer gato...which rhymes with pato, but is not right. I told her we were eating cat. She thought it was funny...I, however, was embarassed. Example number two: I wanted to say something involving the word brain which is cabeza, but instead I used the word cerveza (meaning beer). Again, she thought this was funny. But, it is in making mistakes that we learn and we laugh and well, she gets a kick out of it.

Lost in Translation

So the other day, I was on the train with two other girls: one was half english, half german (Elisabeth), the other was a german girl (Katharina) who used to live here and speaks French and some English. So, I saw a sign for the fair (it comes to Paris every year and is here for about 3 months or so). I have never been, so I was speaking in French to Katharina saying how I wanted to go to the fair and I had never been and I had been here for 3 1/2 years and I had never done that....and going on and on. Well, she didn't understand the French word for fair, or what it was, so I turned to Elisabeth and I said in English, "What is the German word for a fair?" So, she translated the word to Katharina in German and I kept going on and on about the fair. Well, Katharina looks at me and says in French, "I don't understand." So, I look to Elisabeth and I said, you translated the word fair, right? She says, "Oh no, I thought you said AFFAIR" So, this whole time, Katharina thought I wanted to have an AFFAIR and not go to the fair, but now she knows that I wanted to go to the fair! :)

I have a shower!!

Well, I always had a shower, but Thursday morning I washed my hair in the sink, that was fun. Then my landlord came over on Thursday evening and saw that it was the hose and she removed it and then I had water in the shower but you know about only at 2 feet high so Friday, I took a shower squatting pretty much. It was pretty funny. But, she came over last nite and replaced it, so now I have a new one and I'm happy! I was scared I'd be without a shower until next week......

No Shower

My shower is broken. Went to turn it on last night...no water. Again, this morning...no water. So, I went to talk to the super and she told me I had to call my landlord. I did that and she is very busy and doesn't know when she'll have time to come over or have someone come over and fix it...at least I have my sink with running water....

My 28th Birthday

So for my 28th Birthday, I went to a Pizza restaurant with my friend Fatima to eat pizza (free because I know the pizza man) and they gave me a free dessert. Then, hung out with a bunch of friends. I got my hair cut in the morning too :) But, now you can't even tell because it grows so fast. All in all, had fun with friends and was spoiled and I think I ate three different desserts that day...so wonderful :) Then my friend Laurene came for the weekend to celebrate again :)

Christmas Part 1

Me in Venise, Italy where it was very very very cold

The best hot chocolate ever! It was like eating liquid pudding :)

My cousin Jonathan in the train....we were sleeping 6 people (4 strangers plus me and him) in a room about the size of a closet....interesting experience to say the least. It was a sleeper train...in my mind, I was thinking like in White Christmas, but not so much!

Me and Fatima Christmas Day....one of my bestest friends :)

The "Buche de Noel" which I would LOVE to eat every day...so yummy!

Crawdads....part of the traditional French Christmas dinner...it was fun eating them :)

Escargot...in a garlic/pesto type sauce...so yummy!

Me and Rose on Christmas Eve....another good friend :)

SNOW

Like I had said before, it's been SO cold here....around 10 Farenheit and below. Monday it snowed all day long and I walked in the snow all day long and came back with wet feet. Apparently my boots are not made for snow! Doesn't seem to be getting any warmer and the snow has melted some, but it's still around...

Our tiny snowman....six inches tall....maybe. Snow is cold and making a big one just didn't seem like fun!

Me in front of the Eiffel Tower

This is the park across from my apartment.....full of snow

My cousin Jonathan and I in the snow
