More Language Issues
Well, I speak French fluently....so I'm not talking about French issues and you might be surprised that I have issues in English sometimes because I forget English words even though I'm a native English speaker. This time, I'm talking about Spanish....one might say that I can speak Spanish and I can have conversations. This week, I have no choice but to speak Spanish. We are working with a church this week and there is a lady that has come to help us that is from Costa Rica and works in Spain and speaks a few words of English and knows some words in French. So, communication is hard. So, out of everyone, I speak the most Spanish and I have found myself translating (what???) either from English to Spanish or French to Spanish or Spanish to English and Spanish to French. Yeah, so I don't know how that is happening. Anyhow, I have made two errors that this lady found funny in the past few days and knowing the words, but just having the wrong word come out of my mouth. Example number one: We were eating lunch and she asked me what we were eating. The answer was duck. I learned the spanish word for duck from Elaine about 10 years ago or so when she told me that she wanted to have a child and have him say "El pato dice qua qua" meaning that the duck says quack quack. Anyhow, so she asks me what it is and I answer gato...which rhymes with pato, but is not right. I told her we were eating cat. She thought it was funny...I, however, was embarassed. Example number two: I wanted to say something involving the word brain which is cabeza, but instead I used the word cerveza (meaning beer). Again, she thought this was funny. But, it is in making mistakes that we learn and we laugh and well, she gets a kick out of it.
